“A delightful Celtic story that will entertain and educate children, along with their parents and grandparents! The marriage of Terri Karsten’s wonderful storytelling (which also includes the background behind the myth) and Bekah Grace’s lovely artwork brings to vivid life the story behind the Giant’s Causeway in Ireland. Highly recommended!”

A delightful presentation of the legend of Finn McCool. Both charming and funny, children (and adults) will be enjoying the thoroughly entertaining illustrations and lively text.
- Valerie Biel, author of the award-winning Circle of Nine series.
'Finn McCool and the Giant's Causeway is an exciting and hilarious story deeply rooted in folklore about the formation of a famous Irish natural wonder; a tale of the feud between two frankly ridiculous giants and one cunning and mischievous giantess who resolves the feud with minimal violence and maximum humor. The charmingly illustrated story will have you roaring with laughter like a giant.'

Back in the days before computers and cellphones, kids made their fun, so Mindy Piper is good at finding things to do. Best of all is the 4th of July with the annual Kiddie Parade.
But this year, everything is different.
Mindy’s older brother, Brad, is too busy mowing lawns, and her younger brother, Toby, just gets into mischief. Mom has made promises to finish a job for her client and doesn’t have time for anything else, and Dad is on the road and won’t get home in time. When Mindy offers to babysit her little brother, she doesn’t have time to plan for the parade either.
That means the Piper family won’t be able to celebrate the 4th of July unless Mindy can figure out a way to save the day.
Meg Kelly doesn't expect any handouts, but she wouldn't mind a bit of luck. It's been one bad break after another since Da died in the Civil War. Now homeless and orphaned, Meg has nothing left to lose—except her little brother, Mole. With no one to turn to and no place else to go, Meg makes a desperate choice. Together, she and Mole head west on an orphan train.

This Common Core-aligned teacher’s guide is designed to accompany When Luck Runs Out—the novel and the guide fit into the middle school language arts or social studies curriculum. The novel works well in language arts’ studies of genre fiction, lit circles, independent reading, or whole-class instruction, with themes of family and loyalty. Students also have multiple opportunities to examine symbolism within the novel. For social studies, the novel ties into the aftermath of the Civil War and issues of immigration and homelessness.
This guide includes information about the author, an introduction to the novel, pre- and post-reading activities, and assessments. Two non-fiction articles (on the Civil War Draft Riots of 1863 and the historical orphan trains) tie the novel to real-life struggles in this era. Each article is followed by discussion questions and vocabulary. Exercises in reading primary documents are included in order to broaden students’ reading skills. Discussion questions and vocabulary are provided for each chapter, along with an answer key.
