A totally involving, fast-paced historical mystery set in 1764 Pennsylvania. Skullduggery begins with the arrival of an acting troupe at the inn run by beaus Miles Tucker and Penelope Corbitt. The actors—men, women, and children—are confined to the inn after one of their own is found murdered in the stable on their first day. Trouble multiplies quickly with the motley collection of actors, each with their own agenda for want of a coin and other motives. Romantic entanglements involving the troupe and Penelope’s own daughter sweeten the brisk pacing in a well-crafted and expertly researched mystery. Karsten has done an excellent job using historical information about food and other customs, government entities, and laws of the time period. The author’s notes include information about acting troupes that included Black actors. Recipes for the unusual meal items—such as “Bird’s Nest Pudding”—round out the many reasons to enjoy A Player’s Exit. Highly recommended novel. ~~ Christine DeSmet, mystery author and writing coach
Penelope Corbitt has had more than her share of challenges in life, but a new one arrives when a group of players seeking hospitality descends upon the tavern where she works. When one of the actors is found dead, Penelope must summon all of her intellect and experience to help find the culprit. Penelope is a complex and intriguing protagonist. Terri Karsten evokes a fascinating time period by setting The Player's Exit in 1764, and deftly weaves together a number of period-appropriate plot strands.

"An absolute gem of a historical mystery! Terri Karsten sweeps you straight into 1763 with such vivid, pitch-perfect historical detail you can almost smell the dank air and feel the pitching of the coach. Her cast of characters is so real and compelling that I was sad to give them up at the end until I realized this is just the first in a series.
The plot twists as much as it turns—every revelation as surprising as the last—making it one of those “just one more chapter” reads that somehow turns into finishing the whole thing in a single sitting. Karsten’s portrayal of the challenges women faced in this era is unflinching, yet she gifts us a heroine brimming with wit, courage, and determination.
Blending heart-pounding suspense, rich history, and a whisper of romance, this novel earns a well-deserved spot at the very top of my favorites list this year." - Valerie Biel, award-winning author
